Plot/Synopsis:

Passion and politics become strange bedfellows in this omantic drama from Polish filmmaker Waldemar Krzystek. In the mid-1960′s, Legnica was a city in Southwest Poland that was home to Soviet troops stationed in the country. The relationship between the Russian military and Polish civilians was often difficult; Soviet troops were not allowed to fraternize with Poles or even enter their homes, but living in close proximity with one another, it was almost inevitable that friendships and even romance would grow between them. Michal (Leslaw Zurek), was a Polish military officer who worked side-by side with the Russians, and Vera (Svetlana Khodchenkova) was the lovely wife of Yuri (Dmitrij Ulianov), a Soviet pilot who was one of Michal’s colleagues. A mutual attraction led to a forbidden love affair between Michal and Vera, and three decades later, Yuri is still trying to determine if he or Michal is the true father of his daughter (also played by Khodchenkova).

Oscar-winning director Florian Gallenberger explores the crucial role that foreigners played in helping countless Chinese escape a fate worse than death in this period docudrama concerning the 1937 invasion of Nanking by the ruthless Japanese Imperial Army.
Casually known by historians as the “Rape of Nanking,” the relentless assault on the then-Chinese capitol found countless men, women, and children slaughtered with a ferocity that shocked the entire world. Yet, despite the violence that surrounded them, some people refused to sit by silently as the innocents perished.
One of those people was German engineer and Nazi party member John Rabe, who earned the nickname “The Schindler of China” for constructing a vast safety zone in which nearly a quarter of a million civilians sought sanctuary. ~ Jason Buchanan, Allmovie

Men of faith find their pacifist beliefs put to the test in this drama inspired by a true story.
Christian is the leader of an order of Trappist monks living in the hills outside Algiers. The community outside the monastery is almost exclusively Muslim, and the monks have worked to foster understanding between themselves and their neighbors; they observe Muslim traditions, are well versed in the Koran, and provide medical and charitable assistance to the townspeople. The monastery is an oasis of calm and peace as Algeria is caught up in a civil war, with forces led by Muslim extremists leading a bloody campaign against the nation’s rulers.
Christian and his monks do not wish to take sides in a conflict they believe is immoral; they refuse the protection of the military while also denying aid and comfort to the insurgents. The monks’ efforts to remain outside the war, however, have ugly consequences when they’re taken hostage by a band of Islamic revolutionaries. ~ Mark Deming, Allmovie
